Fire Warden Awareness
What fire wardens do before, during and after an alarm — and what they must not do.
Why it matters
Wardens make evacuation fast and orderly, and give the fire service accurate information on arrival.
Who it's for: Nominated fire wardens, floor marshals and supervisors.
Learning objectives — by the end you can:
- Describe warden duties in prevention and evacuation.
- Explain sweep and roll-call procedures.
- Know the limits of the role.
Key terms
- Assembly point
- A safe, pre-agreed location where people gather after evacuating.
- Sweep
- A quick check of an assigned area to prompt people to leave — without delaying your own exit.
- PEEP
- Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan for people who need assistance.
Lesson notes
Duties
| When | Duties |
|---|---|
| Daily | Keep exits and routes clear; report damaged signs or extinguishers |
| Alarm | Direct people to exits; sweep your area if safe; close doors |
| Assembly | Report your area clear/not clear to the chief warden |
| After | Join the debrief; record issues |
Limits
Do not re-enter the building, search smoke-filled areas or fight fires beyond your training. Using an extinguisher is only appropriate if trained, the fire is small and you have a clear exit.
